Digital health lab to connect promising startups with world-class partners and resources for zero-equity

BOSTON, DEC. 13 - MassChallenge™, the most startup-friendly accelerator on the planet, today announced the 31 startups joining PULSE@MassChallenge’s inaugural cohort. Representing the most innovative digital health technologies, these startups were selected from more than 430 applicants from 30 states and 20 countries around the world.

“Digital health is such an exciting and fast-growing sector, but entrepreneurs still face a steep slope of strict regulatory environments and other barriers that slow the pace of innovation,” said Nick Dougherty, Program Director, PULSE@ MassChallenge. “If we want to help patients and the people who care for them, we need to focus on fostering collaboration in the space. PULSE@ MassChallenge is building an ecosystem that brings the community together and makes it easier for entrepreneurs to develop and market digital solutions to the most pressing issues in healthcare.”

Launched as a strategic component of the Massachusetts statewide Digital Health Initiative, PULSE@ MassChallenge works with key players from across the region’s leading healthcare ecosystem. The goal is to provide promising startups with the strategic relationships, resources, mentorship, and community access needed to create an impact in digital health -- all for zero equity.

Through rigorous matchmaking, the first-ever cohort was selected by an impressive pool of institutions, corporations, payors, and healthcare partners looking to form unique partnerships with digital health startups. These Champions will support entrepreneurs working out of PULSE@ MassChallenge’s 8,000 square-foot innovation lab by facilitating key advisor introductions, pilots, research, and even investment opportunities over the course of six months. At the culmination of the program, startups will compete for more than $100,000 in zero-equity awards.

“Massachusetts is already considered to be the global destination for healthcare and biotechnology, and it’s incredible to see public and private partners across the state come together to support digital health entrepreneurs and accelerate this next wave of innovation, which is expected to reach $32 billion globally over the next decade,” said Scott Bailey, Managing Director, MassChallenge Boston.

The 2017 cohort received offers to collaborate with PULSE@ MassChallenge’s network of partners and Champions, including the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the City of Boston, the Massachusetts Competitive PartnershipSuffolk ConstructionSamuels & AssociatesVertex Pharmaceuticals, the Massachusetts eHealth Institute at MassTechAARPShireBoseCernerHumanaLiberty MutualServierSunovion PharmaceuticalsPfizerAnalog DevicesBDHarvard Pilgrim Health CarePhilips HealthcareMicrosoftRopes & Gray LLPBeth Israel DeaconessBoston Children’s HospitalBrigham and Women’s HospitalDell EMCFranciscan Children’sMassachusetts General HospitalPathfinder InternationalPlanetree, and TechSpring of Baystate Health.
