Moneta Health is aiming to become the standard mode of care for treating and preventing cognitive decline through their phone-based scalable platform. With a neurologist shortage affecting 40 U.S. states and a resigned cultural attitude towards slowing cognitive decline, Moneta Health decided to act by developing a solution to help older adults function at their best.
Moneta’s unique program offers cognitive rehabilitation therapy, a behavioral intervention shown to preserve cognitive function and promote independence in older adults with Mild Cognitive Impairment and early dementia. The program is delivered entirely over the telephone by compassionate therapists and through an automated AI voice assistant.
Moneta Health therapists conduct a 60-minute brain health evaluation with each patient, then provide subsequent on-demand therapy and weekly check-in calls. By reaching people at home through a simple phone call, their solution is poised to provide much-needed support to millions of people in underserved communities.
The company was a recent finalist in the Mass Digital Health Healthy Aging Challenge, hosted by the Massachusetts eHealth Institute (MeHI), which drives healthcare innovation, technology, and competitiveness across Massachusetts.
Moneta’s COO and Co-founder Jen Flexman says that their experience as a finalist in MeHI’s Healthy Aging Challenge has been “hugely impactful” on their growth as a company.
“The program led us to develop our network in Massachusetts and get valuable feedback and insights on our product,” said Flexman.
As a Challenge finalist, Moneta was connected with the University of Massachusetts Amherst and Deaconess Abundant Life Communities, two organizations in the Massachusetts Digital Health Sandbox Network. Moneta was able to leverage these key relationships to design a research project to advance their AI capabilities. The project focuses on AI models that automatically analyze speech recorded through Moneta’s platform, and recently received funding through the a2 Pilot Program from the National Institute on Aging. The project will help Moneta improve and scale their clinician experience.
In addition to advancing their technology platform, they are also focused on growing their partnerships with neurologists, primary care providers and health systems to reach more patients. They have plans to expand to new states under Medicare and build their real-world evidence base to further demonstrate their impact.
